Bison Volleyball Beats Lafayette in Home, Patriot League Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Shannon Walker tallied a match-high 14 kills, leading the Bucknell University volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Lafayette College in the Bison's home and Patriot League opener this evening in Davis Gym.
Bucknell's win snapped the team's three-match losing streak. Lafayette lost for the ninth straight match to open the season.
Bucknell (4-4, 1-0 Patriot League) jumped on the Leopards (0-9, 0-1 Patriot League) early, building a 7-3 lead in game one. The Bison gradually pulled away to win the first set 30-17. In game two, Bucknell used an 8-0 run to turn a 13-8 advantage into a 21-9 lead en route to a 30-15 victory. Lafayette trailed just 24-22 in the third set before the Bison ended the game and match on a 7-0 run.
Walker finished the evening with just two errors on 23 attempts for a .522 hitting percentage. She also added a match-high four blocks. Sophomore Brandi Trapasso also reached double figures with 10 kills to go with five digs. Senior Whitney Williams recorded match-highs of 27 assists and three service aces, and freshman Jackie Leahy posted a match-high seven digs.
Lafayette was led by freshmen Erin Brune and Kate Walkenhorst, who tallied a team-high five kills apiece. Freshman Heidi Olichwier added 11 assists.
The Bison return to action tomorrow night when they host Lehigh University in another Patriot League showdown at 7 p.m. Lafayette returns home to face non-league opponent Robert Morris on Sunday.
