Bison Volleyball Defeats Lehigh, 3-1

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell University volleyball team used a balanced team effort to down Patriot League rival Lehigh 3-1 in a nip and tuck affair Saturday evening in Davis Gym.
After defeating Lafayette 3-0 last night, the Bison are now 2-0 in the Patriot League and 5-4 overall. Lehigh falls to 3-5 and 1-1 in league play.
Sophomore Brandi Trapasso led the Bison with a team-high 14 kills while posting match-highs of 20 digs and four service aces. Freshman Jackie Leahy contributed with 13 kills and 14 digs, and senior Whitney Williams recorded a team-high 31 assists to go with 16 digs.
Junior Rochelle Healea paced Lehigh with a match-high 19 kills, and senior Kira Bosak led all players with 36 assists. Sophomore Jeannette Singleton added a match-high 20 digs.
All four sets were extremely close. Bucknell built a 16-10 lead in game one, but Lehigh put together a 10-4 run to pull to within 21-20. The Bison then outscored the Mountain Hawks 9-4 the rest of the way for a 30-24 win. A back and forth battle ensued in the second match, which featured 12 ties. Neither side led by more than three until Lehigh closed the set on a 4-0 run following a 26-26 deadlock.
Bucknell won 30-26 in the third set that was just as tight, with neither team leading by more than four. In the fourth set the Bison jumped out to an 8-2 advantage, but Lehigh came back with a 10-4 run to tie the game at 12. Bucknell would break open the set with a 5-0 run following a 17-17 tie, and the Bison held off the Mountain Hawks down the stretch to win 30-28.
Bucknell will take a break from Patriot League play on Wednesday when it hosts St. Francis (Pa.) at 7 p.m. Lehigh returns to action tomorrow when it hosts non-league opponent Robert Morris at 5 p.m.
