LEWISBURG, PA - Jon Terry, a 1993 Bucknell University graduate, has been named Assistant Director of Athletics and Director of Athletic Communications at Bucknell University, Director of Athletics John Hardt announced.
Terry replaces Todd Newcomb who was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs.
Terry, who worked in the Office of Athletic Communications at Bucknell as an assistant for two years immediately following graduation, returns to his alma mater after six years as an assistant in the office of Media Relations at the United States Military Academy.
"We are extremely excited to welcome Jon back to Bucknell," commented Hardt on the appointment. "He has a solid understanding of Bison athletics, and comes to us with a wealth of experience from an outstanding media relations office at West Point."
At Army Terry served as the primary media contact for the nationally ranked Army men's lacrosse team as well as the Army hockey team. During his tenure at West Point, Terry also worked closely with the Black Knights' women's volleyball, wrestling, tennis and track and field programs, while serving as the media relations director for the Collegiate Sprint Football League. Also a contributing writer for the award-winning Army football game program, Terry has received numerous citations for both his writing and publication design. Terry's 2000 lacrosse media guide was voted "Best in the Nation" by the College Sports Information Directors of America, while his 2000-01 hockey media guide placed sixth in the national contest. He also contributed to the Army football media guide, which was selected "Third in the Nation" in 1999.
Wrestling USA magazine cited Terry's wrestling media guide as "Best in the Nation" in 1997-98 and "Third in the Nation" in 1996-97 in its judging of small-format publications. Terry and Director of Media Relations Bob Beretta collaborated on the Army baseball guide, which was judged as "Best in the District" by the CoSIDA in 1998 and 1999. The Army media relations office also notched "Best in the Nation" laurels for its 1996 Poulan/Weed Eater Independence Bowl media guide and media guide cover, and its football game program has earned numerous national awards from CoSIDA.
In the annual CoSIDA writing contest, Terry garnered "Second in the Nation" and "Best in the District" accolades for his recap of Army's thrilling 59-52 double-overtime win over Louisville in 1999, and his feature story on 1996 U.S. Olympian Diana Wills also merited "Best in the District" honors. In addition, his coverage of the 1999 Patriot League men's and women's basketball tournament helped Army Athletics Online -- the official Web site of Army Athletics -- claim a "Second in the Nation" certificate in the internet presentation competition.
After graduating from Bucknell with a bachelor of arts degree in geology, Terry served as a sports information assistant at his alma mater from 1993-95. While a student at Bucknell, the 30-year-old Ellicott City, Md., native served as sports editor of The Bucknellian for two semesters and as a staff writer for three others. He also worked as a staff writer for the Milton Standard, covering Little League and amateur baseball, and was the public address announcer at Bucknell football and basketball games.
While at West Point Terry served in a media relations capacity for a myriad of NCAA championship events hosted by the Academy, including the 1997 and 2001 Men's Lacrosse regional doubleheaders, as well as gymnastics, swimming and golf regionals. He coordinated media operations for the prestigious Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships in 1999 and has overseen a host of conference championship events. A member of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association of America, Terry also worked on the media relations staff at the 1999 NCAA Men's Basketball East Regional in East Rutherford, N.J.
Bucknell sponsors 28 intercollegiate sports, 14 each for men and women, at the Division I level (I-AA in football).
