Men's Water Polo Team Receives All-Academic Honors

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's water polo team placed six student-athletes on the American Water Polo Coaches Association All-Academic team for the 2000-01 academic year. The association acknowledges all water polo players who achieved a grade point average within the range of 3.2 - 4.0, on a 4.0 scale, during the fall semester and who were starters or significant reserves.
In addition, the association recognizes those institutions whose combined team GPA is over 2.75. Bucknell was honored as one of the top 10 teams with a cumulative GPA of 3.06, giving the school the sixth highest average. BU was third in the number of individual honorees, behind St. Francis (NY) (8) and University of California, Santa Barbara (8).
Two Bucknell players from head coach John Zeigler's squad were listed under the category of "Superior Achievement," having established a GPA between 3.41 and 3.70. Senior co-captain Justin McCarty (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day School) earned a spot on the list with his 3.61 in Accounting and classmate James Miante (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) was also honored with a 3.58 GPA in mathematics. It is the second-straight superior honor for J. McCarty.
Four Bison were listed in the "Excellent Achievement" category with a GPA in the range of 3.2 - 3.4. Senior Chris Kempton (New York, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) headlined this group, posting a 3.40 grade point average in economics and landing on the team for the third-consecutive year.
Joining Kempton in the excellent category were senior co-captain Kevin Permisohn (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook), junior Ryan McCarty (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day School) and freshman Jamie Saettele (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue Horton Watkins). Permisohn earned a spot on the team for the fourth year, posting a 3.35 as a civil engineering major. R. McCarty makes his third-straight appearance on the squad with a 3.34 average in biology, while Saettele posted a 3.25 for the semester.
Bucknell finished its 2000 season with a 21-21 overall record, marking the fourth-straight season that the program has recorded over 18 wins. The Bison were 3-5 in the College Water Polo Association's Southern Division and finished third at the conference tournament.
