LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell University senior first baseman Russ Lindberg (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) has been named the 2001 Patriot League Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The academic honor was the second of the spring for Lindberg who was chosen to the Verizon Academic All-District 2 First Team earlier this month. He graduated with a 3.57 grade-point-average and a degree in finance on Sunday, and was a perennial member of the Dean's List and the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Lindberg is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, a member of the French Club, and a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. In addition, he is part of Bucknell's student-managed Investment Fund, which is a class that invests $200,000 of the school's endowment and then reports annually to the board of trustees.
Entering the NCAA Regionals this weekend, Lindberg leads the Bison with a .363 batting average. The 6'4," 235-lb senior earned All-Patriot League First Team honors and was a candidate for league Player of the Year. He led the Patriot League in home runs (9), runs batted in (57), sacrifice flies (6), and total bases (95), and was third in slugging percentage (.605). In the field, he led all players with 389 putouts and 415 chances.
He was selected to the Pepsi-Johnny Quik All-Tournament team at Fresno State earlier in the season. He hit .458 during that week, including a blistering .647 (11-17) over the final four games of the tournament. Linbderg also took home Patriot League Player of the Week honors following his performance on the spring break trip to California.
Lindberg is the third Bucknell baseball player to earn the scholar-athlete honor, joining Jim Zervanos (1992) and Frank Fresconi (2000). He is the 83rd Bucknell student-athlete to earn Patriot League Scholar-Athlete honors since the league's inception.
To be eligible for scholar-athlete honors, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore and have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA.
