Crew Team Competes At Knecht Cup

Camden, N.J. - The Bucknell crew team competed at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River this past weekend and finished with several solid performances. The regatta, which is hosted by Villanova University, was held on Saturday, March 31.
The women's varsity pair of senior Stephanie Sturm (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) and Jessica Smith (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) won their respective race over a competitive Lehigh boat with a final time of 8:48.80. The duo won the race with only three seconds to spare over the varsity pair boat from Lehigh. Sturm and Smith were the only two Bison to win a race, but both the women's frosh and women's second frosh eight-person boats turned in third and fifth place finishes, respectively. The eight-person novice lightweight boat took third place with a 7:54.54 clocking while Bucknell's second novice lightweight boat finished fifth in its race with a time of 8:07.04.
In the men's races, the Orange and Blue had one boat finish in the top three of any race. The men's lightweight four boat took second place in its race with a time of 7:31.60, only .52 ahead of the third place boat but 30 seconds behind the winning boat from Fordham. Sitting in the boat for the Bison were junior Jeremy Urban (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior), sophomores Aaron Bates (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough), Trevor Gibson (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River), Brian Albert (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) and freshman coxswain Justin Faden (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North).
The men's heavyweight four-person boat pulled out a fifth place finish with a time of 7:13.31 after qualifying for the finals by finishing third in the first heat. The four-person boat plus the coxswain is comprised of sophomores Jeff Dasch (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein), Aaron Casagrande (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River), Mike Brooks-Williams (Minneapolis, Minn./John F. Kennedy), freshman Chuck Dickhart (Wayne, Pa./Episcopal Academy) and sophomore coxswain Nikhil Menon (Mumbai, India/St. Joseph's). Rounding out the scoring boats for the Orange and Blue was the men's frosh novice eight which finished fourth with a finals time of 6:45.12.
The Bucknell crew team will continue with competition this coming weekend when the team travels to Bethlehem, Pa. for the Lehigh Duals on Saturday, April 7.
