Lewisburg, Pa. --- Bucknell seniors Jessica Smith (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) and Stephanie Sturm (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) have received the Subway Athletes of the Month Award for the month of April in Crew.
The award was announced at the monthly Bucknell Women's Sports Luncheon, held Monday, April 30. Sponsored by Lewisburg Subway, the luncheon recognizes one outstanding student-athlete from each Bucknell women's sport in season at that time. The other winners for the month of April, as selected by their respective coaches, were sophomore Khadija Shariff in Outdoor Track & Field, junior Kristin Inglis in tennis, sophomore Brandi Porter in softball, sophomore Lindsay Chesterfield in water polo, and sophomore Nicole Kallis in lacrosse.
Smith and Sturm have teamed up together all this season in the women's pair boat. On the first weekend of April at the Knecht Cup, the pair won their respective race with a time of 8:48.80 over a competitive boat from Lehigh. Lehigh's pair would get revenge at the Lehigh Dual Regatta over the Bucknell pair however. The duo recovered to finish out the month with a strong showing at the MIRA Championship Regatta. Sturm and Smith finished first in their race at MIRA's.
The Bison crew team will continue with competition this coming weekend when the varsity team travels to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships in Fairfax, Va.
