LEWISBURG, Pa. - Playing in one of its final home doubleheaders of the season, the Bucknell softball team split a pair of games with visiting St. Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday, April 24. The Red Flash claimed the opener, 4-1, after a three-run sixth inning, while the Bison took the nightcap in a 1-0 defensive battle.
In game one, Bucknell tallied first with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, freshman outfielder Erin Doyle (Wayne, Pa./Upper Merion) tripled down the right field line. Junior catcher Kathy Zeevalk (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) followed with an RBI single to right field to give the Bison the 1-0 lead. St. Francis (Pa.) answered with three runs in the top half of the fifth frame, taking a 3-1 lead. With two runners on and one out, pitcher Stacy Scofield helped her own cause, clubbing a single up the middle to tie the game, 1-1. One out later, Amanda Walter collected the Red Flash's fourth hit of the inning, singling up the middle to plate Jamie Krusinsky and Scofield. St. Francis (Pa.) got another run in the top of the sixth inning, taking advantage of two hits and one error in the frame, to build its lead to 4-1. The Orange and Blue went down in order the next two innings and the Red Flash came away with the 4-1 win.
In the second game, junior outfielder Lauren Titus (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) singled to right field with one out in the first inning, and advanced to second on a fielding error by the right fielder. Junior first baseman Kelly Dugan (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) followed with a single to right field to advance Titus to third. After Dugan, who was 3-for-3 in the contest, stole second and senior third baseman Charity Ford (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport) walked to load the bases, junior outfielder Jenna Demetriades (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua) singled through the right side to score Titus. That run would prove to be the only one of the game as Bucknell picked up the 1-0 win.
Sophomore pitcher Brandi Porter (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) pitched the complete game for Bucknell, allowing six hits, striking out seven and walking just one. Porter, who improved her season record to 9-7, sat the Red Flash down in order in the final two innings, striking out three of the six batters she faced. She improved her season total for strikeouts to 91, just nine shy of the Bucknell single-season record.
Bucknell moves to 17-22-2 overall and will travel to Colgate for a crucial weekend series with the Red Raiders on Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29. St. Francis (Pa.) moves to 15-22 overall.
