LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in game one and used a five-run sixth inning in the second game to come away with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Lafayette in Patriot League softball action on Saturday, April 21. The Bison won 10-1 in six innings in the opener and held on for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.
In the first game, Bucknell pounded out 14 hits off of Leopards pitcher Amy Magos. Lafayette did get on the board first, scoring its only run of the game in the top of the first inning. Bison pitcher Brandi Porter (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) struck out two batters in the inning, but Lafayette's Laura Schrager reached on an error and later scored on another Bucknell error to put them ahead early.
BU responded with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame, before going on to score three more in the fourth and four in the sixth inning, while shutting the Leopards down, to end the game due to the eight-run rule. Porter pitched the complete game for the Orange and Blue, allowing just four hits and striking out five. Offensively, senior Charity Ford (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport), junior Jenna Demetriades (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua) and freshman Angela Stackhouse (Muncy, Pa./Hughesville) were all 3-for-3 in the contest. Ford and Stackhouse both had a double, while Demetriades had a triple and three runs batted in.
In the nightcap, Bucknell and Lafayette played scoreless ball through the first four innings before the Leopards struck again with one run in the top of the fifth. Lafayette carried the 1-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth frame when the Bucknell bats came alive. The Orange and Blue collected four hits in the inning, scoring five times to build a four-run lead, 5-1, heading into the seventh. Lafayette made things interesting, however, scoring three runs with one out in the top of the seventh frame to get within one, 5-4, before the Bison defense came through in the clutch to end the game by that count. Sophomore Lauren Box (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) picked up the win for Bucknell, pitching 6.1 innings and striking out two. Porter came in with one out in the seventh to pick up her first save of the season. Ford continued her hot hitting, going 2-for-3 in the nightcap.
Bucknell improves to 15-20-2 overall and 7-7 in the Patriot League. The Bison face Lafayette in a doubleheader on Sunday, April 22, beginning at 12:00 noon. Lafayette falls to 7-28 overall and 3-11 in the conference.
