Women's Water Polo Team Concludes Season With School Record for Wins

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's water polo team finished the 2001 spring season earning a school record for wins in a season with 18 victories. The Bison posted an 18-13 overall record with a College Water Polo Association, Mid-Atlantic Conference of the Southern Division record of 2-6. The squad was under the direction of head coach John Zeigler, who looked to senior co-captains Julie McLaughlin (Woodside, Calif./Menlo) and Paige Cull (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) to play a leadership role.
Cull and McLaughlin both posted great numbers over their three-year careers on the team. Cull finished her career with a total 171 points with 132 goals and 39 assists. She had 76 points in her final season, while also leading the team in shots with 139. On the defensive end, she was the squad leader in steals with 80. Cull was named to the Collegiate Water Polo Association all-conference second team in the Allegheny Division during her junior year. She also holds the Bucknell record for career best goals with 132.
McLaughlin also had an impressive career for the Orange and Blue. She finished with 186 points over her three-years with 100 goals and 86 assists. McLaughlin was third on the team for points scored this season with 79, scoring 45 goals and adding 34 assists. She was recognized this year for her efforts in victories over Grove City, Slippery Rock and Salem International, being named Player of the Week by the Collegiate Water Polo Association.
McLaughlin and Cull both earned Subway Athlete of the Month honors for the months of February and March, respectively.
Rounding out the senior class for the Bison are Allison Hernandez (Newton, Pa./Pennsbury) and Kimberly Kaczor (Union, N.J./Union). Hernandez finished the season with nine points while Kaczor added four points. These four seniors will be sorely missed next season, both for their athletic talents and leadership given to the program.
The junior class for the Bison is comprised of four individuals, all contributing in some way to the success of the team. Adrienne Schober (Houston, Texas/Clearlake) has had a remarkable season and career for the Bison thus far. She currently holds the records for career best points (211) and career best assists (113). In addition, Schober moved into first place in the all-time record book with 93 points on the season and 58 assists, surpassing the old marks of 83 and 41, respectively.
Brooke Rea (Canandaigua, N.Y./Los Altos) was second on the team behind Schober for points this season and moved into second place for points in a season all-time at Bucknell with 85. Rea had 58 goals and 27 assists for the Bison in 2001, contributing to her 111 career goals and 50 total assists. She also led the team this year with 33 ejections drawn and was second on the team with 62 steals.
Dana Clarke (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) and Meredith Stevens (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) also contributed to the success of the Bison. Clarke finished seventh on the team for points scored this season with 14 goals and 5 assists, totaling 19 points. She has now scored 43 points on her career. Stevens, a forward, scored 14 points for the Bison in 2001 and has tallied 29 points over her two-year stint for the Bison. Stevens also played one game in goal for the Bison and had an impressive .857 save percentage.
Comprised of six women, the sophomore class is the largest for the Bison. After an impressive freshman campaign, Katy Stahler (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) finished sixth on the team with 42 points on the season and currently has 103 points over her career. She was second on the team with 31 ejections drawn and also recorded 50 steals for the Orange and Blue. Lindsay Chesterfield (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) stepped into a starting role this season as a goalkeeper. She played in and started all 31 games and recorded 267 saves with a save percentage of .523, both school single-season records.
Also on the roster representing the class of 2001 for the Bison were Elizabeth Wilmarth (Brookline, Mass./Brookline), Jamie Fulop (Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville), Christina Gillis (Havertown, Pa./Episcopal Academy) and newcomer Becky Dolan (Pine Forge, Pa./Boyertown), who is also a member of the swim team.
The Bison also had four freshmen joining the squad this year. Kelly Hofstetter (Scotts Valley, Calif./Harbor) had a noteworthy rookie year for the Orange and Blue. She was fifth on the team in scoring this season with 63 points, which places her first on the all-time record list for freshman scoring. Her 44 goals ties a season-high for rookies and her 19 assists sets a new standard. Daniella Faas (Ludwigshafen, Germany/Worcester Academy), also a member of the swim team during the winter, did some scoring for the Bison this season. She scored 15 points, ranking her eighth on the team in that category. Her 11 goals and four assists place her fourth for freshman scoring at BU. Katelyn Webber (Southampton, Mass./The Williston Northampton School) and Caity Selleck (Hamilton, N.Y./Hamilton Central) round out the freshman class for the Bison. Webber had 22 shots for the Bison scoring five goals and tallying three assists, while Selleck scored two goals and had one assist.
The Bison finished their season with a 3-1 record at the Southern Championships, giving them in fifth place. After a challenging game against the 14th-ranked team in the country, Michigan, the Orange and Blue squad defeated Grove City, Gannon and Slippery Rock to end the year on a positive note. Zeigler received some stellar play from various individuals on the team and was satisfied with the team's play throughout the season and at the championships.
