LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell gave up three runs in the first inning of game one, and gave Seton Hall six runs in the fourth inning of game two on its way to a doubleheader loss to the visiting Pirates on Tuesday, April 10. The Bison fell 7-4 in the opener and dropped a 7-0 decision in the nightcap.
Seton Hall jumped on Bucknell pitcher Lauren Box (Malvern, Pa./Villa Marie Academy) early in the opener, scoring three runs on four hits in the first inning. The Pirates kept it rolling, scoring again in the second and once in the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 6-0. While the offense was producing, Seton Hall pitcher Misty Beaver seemed to be on cruise control, striking out two batters in each of the first five innings before being relieved with two outs in the fifth. Beaver allowed four Bison hits in 4.2 innings work.
The Orange and Blue finally got to Beaver in the fifth frame, closing the gap to three with three runs in the inning. With one out, junior Barb Wood (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) doubled to left field. Junior Kathy Zeevalk (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) followed with a single through the left side, and one out later sophomore Meredith Gill (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) reached base on a catchers interference call to load the bases. Junior Lauren Titus (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) came through in the clutch, poking a two-run single through the right side. Immediately following a pitching change, Gill scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-3.
The Pirates got a run back in the top of the sixth, but Bucknell quickly answered with a run in its half of the inning to get back within three. Junior Jenna Demetriades (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua) led off the frame with a triple to right field before Wood drove her in with a single to the right side.
Seton Hall went down in order in the seventh and Bucknell threatened when senior Steph Morgan (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) hit a pinch-hit single down the left field line, but the Pirates held the Bison scoreless to come away with the win.
In the nightcap, it was a pitcher's dual through the first three innings with neither hurler yielding a hit. It was Seton Hall who came alive first, registering two hits and taking advantage of four Bucknell errors in the fourth inning to score six runs. The Pirates extended their lead to seven with a run in the top of the seventh, and the Bison could not produce in the bottom of the frame, dropping the game 7-0.
Despite losing 7-0, Bucknell pitcher Lauren Potente (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland) threw seven solid innings for the Bison, allowing only five hits.
Bucknell falls to 11-18-2 overall and will be in action again on Saturday, April 14 at Holy Cross for a 1:00 p.m. Patriot League doubleheader. Seton Hall improves to 17-8 overall.
