LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lehigh University softball team came away with a sweep of Bucknell in Patriot League action on Sunday, April 1. The two teams split a pair of games on Saturday, before Lehigh claimed both games on Sunday. Lehigh took the opener 7-1, and claimed the nightcap, 11-8.
In the opener, Lehigh got its offense rolling right from the start, reaching sophomore pitcher Brandi Porter (Interboro, Pa./Prospect Park) for three hits and three runs in the frame, while taking advantage of two Bison errors. The Mountain Hawks carried the 3-0 lead into the top of the fourth inning when they scored two more runs on four hits in the inning. The Orange and Blue cut into the lead, scoring one run in the bottom of the frame when junior first baseman Kelly Dugan (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) scored on freshman catcher Angie Stackhouse's (Muncy, Pa./Hughesville) sacrifice fly to left field. Lehigh would score again in the fifth and once in the seventh, while holding BU scoreless the rest of the way for the 7-1 win.
Stephanie Howell pitched the complete game for Lehigh, allowing five hits and striking out one.
In the nightcap, it was Bucknell which struck early, building a 4-0 lead after just two innings. With one out and two runners on in the first, junior centerfielder Jenna Demetriades (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua) took a pitch to left centerfield for her first home run of the season, staking the Bison to the early 3-0 lead. The Orange and Blue got to Lehigh pitcher Jenny Bender for one run in the second, chasing her after only two innings.
Lehigh turned it on offensively in the fifth inning, pounding out five hits and scoring seven runs to take a 7-4 lead. Bender, still in the game as the left fielder, had a two-RBI homer in the frame, her second of the series. The Bison refused to quit, responding with four runs in their half of the frame to take over the lead, 8-7, but the Mountain Hawks proved their resilience, scoring four more runs in the top of the sixth and holding the Bucknell team at bay for the remainder of the game. Senior pitcher Emily Deia came in and pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless work for Lehigh, allowing only one hit to pick up the win.
Bucknell falls to 9-12-2 overall and 1-3 in the Patriot League. The Orange and Blue will travel to Towson for a doubleheader with the Tigers on Wednesday, April 4, at 3:00 p.m. Lehigh improves to 11-9 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
