Bison Softball Squad Splits a Pair with Visiting Lehigh

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell softball team split a pair of games with visiting Lehigh in both teams Patriot League openers on Saturday, March 31. The Bison claimed the first game, 2-1, before the Mountain Hawks took a 7-1 contest in the nightcap.
In the opener, Bucknell got on the board early, scoring a run in the bottom half of the first inning. Sophomore shortstop Meredith Gill (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) led off the frame with a single up the middle. Two outs later, junior first baseman Kelly Dugan (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) singled up the middle to score Gill and give the Orange and Blue the early lead.
Lehigh got to Bison pitcher, sophomore Brandi Porter (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro), in the top of the fourth inning, scoring one run on two hits in the frame. The Bison responded, however, going back on top with one run in the bottom of the fourth. Porter only allowed one base runner the rest of the way to pick up the 2-1 win.
In the nightcap, Bucknell struck first again, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning. Senior tri-captain Steph Morgan (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) hit an RBI single to left centerfield to give the Bison the 1-0 cushion. It was all Lehigh from there, as the Mountain Hawks scored one run in the second, three in the third and three more in the sixth, while going through three BU pitchers for the 7-1 win.
Bucknell moves to 9-10-2 overall and 1-1 in Patriot League play. The Mountain Hawks stand at 9-9 overall and 1-1 in league play. The two teams will square off for a doubleheader on Sunday, April 1, at 12:00 noon.
