Monmouth, N.J. - The Bucknell men's and women's track and field teams had a strong showing this weekend at the 6th annual Monmouth University Season Opener. Two women and one man had strong enough performances at the meet to find themselves moving up or onto the BU top-ten performances list.
The women's pole vault event saw two Orange and Blue women move into second and third all-time on the Bucknell top-ten charts. Junior Samantha Klotz (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) and freshman Abby Bouzan-Kaloustia (Orrington, Maine/Brewer) finished second and fifth in the event, respectively. Klotz cleared a height of 8' 6" which gives her the honor of the second best height in school history. In only her first year of collegiate competition, Bouzan-Kaloustia moved into third all-time with a mark of eight feet even.
The only first-place victory at the meet for Bucknell came in the women's triple jump, courtesy of junior Kim Zimbal (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa). Zimbal earned her first triple jump victory of the outdoor season by jumping a distance of 35' 4".
The only record-breaker for the men's squad was freshman Emory Strother (Memphis, Tenn./White Station) in the high jump. Strother slides into a tie for third on the Bison all-time charts after leaping 6' 8". This jump also was good enough to earn him first place honors in the event at Monmouth. Strother was Bucknell's only dual winner at the meet as he also took first place honors in the long jump with a mark of 22' 5 ?".
Also finishing in first place for the BU men's team was sophomore Adam Jacob (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) in the pole vault. Jacob crushed the competition by finally checking out with a mark of 13' 11 ?", his nearest competitor a paltry half foot lower.
The Bucknell track & field teams will continue the 2001 outdoor season when they travel down Route 15 to take part in the Susquehanna Invitational on Saturday, March 31.
