Senior captain Jessica Smith (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) and classmate Stephanie Sturm (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) won the race for Bucknell in just their first Varsity Pair race of the 2001 spring season. Also raking in the first place points for the Bison was the foursome of Sturm, Smith, Newman and Boschen. Sitting in the coxswain's seat for the race was men's team member, Nikhil Menon (Mumbai, India/St. Joseph's).
The men's Varsity Lightweight Four boat was the only boat from the men's team to garner first place points for Bucknell. The Lightweight 4 boat defeated boats from Manhattan and Tenn.-Knoxville with a time of 7:27.6. Controlling the rhythm in the boat was freshman coxswain Justin Faden (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) while junior Jeremy Urban (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior), and sophomores Aaron Bates (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough), Trevor Gibson (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River), and Brian Albert (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) rowed their way to victory "dock". Also scoring points for the Bison cause was the men's Varsity Heavyweight Four boat, which finished in second place, two seconds behind a boat from Dartmouth.
The Augusta-Aiken Langley Pond Regatta was the BU crew team's first outdoor regatta of the spring and winning will help propel the team into its next competition. Next on the docket for the Bison rowers is the Bucknell Spring Invitational, which is being held on Walker Lake, Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25.
