LEWISBURG, PA - Bucknell's first game against a Division I-A opponent in six years and five home games, including the Parents' Weekend game against St. Mary's-CA on September 29 and the Homecoming contest against Georgetown on October 20, highlight the 2001 Bucknell University football schedule. The Bison will open the season at Kent State University on September 8, pitting the Orange and Blue against a Division I-A opponent for the first time since Bucknell played at Army back in 1995.
"We are extremely excited to be able to upgrade our schedule with a Division I-A opponent," stated John Hardt, Bucknell's Director of Athletics & Recreation. "Coach Gadd and I believe that scheduling and competing against a quality Division I-A opponent such as Kent State represents another significant step in building the overall quality and competitiveness of Bucknell's football program."
Gadd, who has led the Bison to six straight winning seasons, is also glad to have Kent State on the schedule, but realizes the challenge before him and the Bison squad. "It will be a real test for our team with the first three games on the road, and all against quality competition. It's a tall order out of the box, but I think our players are excited to be playing Kent. We think our program is at a point where we can play this type of opponent, and we hope we can continue to put these types of programs on our schedule down the road."
After playing at Kent, Bucknell will visit the state of New York on back-to-back Saturday's to take on Ivy League foes Cornell and Columbia. The Big Red finished in second place in the Ivy League last year with a 5-2 conference mark.
Bucknell's home-opener with the Gaels of St. Mary's-CA is scheduled for Parents' Weekend on September 29. The Tigers of Towson University will come to town the following week for the first of seven Patriot League battles. The Bison then travel to the Lehigh Valley for a league game with Lafayette on October 13. Georgetown will begin its first year in the league and will be the Bison Homecoming opponent on October 20.
Bucknell will hit New York state for the third time when it plays at Fordham on October 27th. After a pair of home games against Holy Cross and Lehigh, the 2001 regular season will wrap up on November 17 with a trip to chilly Hamilton, New York, for a matchup with rival Colgate.
Bucknell went 6-5 last year and returns 15 starters and 41 lettermen.
