Baltimore, Md. - The Bucknell men's lacrosse team traveled to Loyola College to record its first win of the season, 9-4, over the North Carolina Tar Heels. Less than 12 hours before the opening face-off, 10:00 a.m., the Bison were in practice and still not sure of where they were to play against the tenth ranked Tar Heels. The team responded well to the early bus trip as sophomore Andrew "Worthy" Sanders (West Chester, Pa./West Chester) led the squad with three goals and an assist.
The Orange and Blue faced an early deficit in the contest after North Carolina struck first with a tally at the 13:50 mark in the first quarter. Returning the favor less than two minutes later was sophomore Dennis Geraghty (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) off a feed from Sanders. The Bison would finish the first period with momentum and a 2-1 advantage after an unassisted goal by senior Michael Cheng (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park). The second quarter also concluded in Bucknell's favor after goals by Sanders and Cheng to give BU a 4-2 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Herd survived an early scare from the Tar Heels to secure their first victory of the 2001 ledger. North Carolina came out firing in the third quarter tallying two goals on two consecutive possessions to knot the game at four a piece. However, the Bison out played UNC in the final 22:30 minutes of the contest scoring five times to register the 9-4 win. Scoring for the Orange and Blue during this streak was Sanders twice, Geraghty, and sophomores Chris Cutillo (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and Rob Lane (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mt. Lakes).
Bucknell earned the victory over North Carolina on both ends of the field. The defensive unit, led by senior Brian Treacher (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), held UNC's '00 third team All-American Jeff Sonke to zero goals and assists on seven shots. After an excellent freshman campaign, sophomore Justin Sussman (Towson, Md./Friends Academy) was strong between the pipes registering 17 saves in the victory.
North Carolina is now 1-1 on the season and the Bucknell men's lacrosse team improves to 1-0 overall. The Bison will begin preparing for their next scheduled competition on March 3, versus Holy Cross at the University of Scranton.
