LEWISBURG, PA - Sophomore forwards Brian Werner (Rockville Centre, N.Y/Chaminade) and Boakai Lalugba (East Orange, N.J./Bishop Francis Essex Catholic) each recorded double-doubles to lead Bucknell to a 71-60 Patriot League victory over Colgate in Davis Gymnasium Sunday afternoon. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Bison (11-14, 3-8) and improved their all-time record against Colgate (12-13, 5-5) in the friendly confines of Davis Gymnasium to 28-11. It was also Pat Flannery's 200th victory as a head coach.
The teams exchanged buckets for much of the early going, including three-lead changes and three ties in the first 13:11 of play. With the score knotted at 20-20, the Red Raiders put together an 11-5 run to move in front 31-25 with 2:33 to go. Freshman Mark Linebaugh had seven points, including five which came at the charity stripe, in the outburst for Colgate. But Werner, who scored 10 of his team-high 13 points in the opening half, keyed a 6-2 streak for the Bison with a pair of buckets to close the gap to 33-31 at the break.
The second stanza began much the way the first did with the teams exchanging baskets, but Bucknell took a 48-43 lead with 10:20 remaining on the strength of a 13-6 run. Co-captain Jake Ramage (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) had five consecutive points during that stretch including the 99th three-pointer of his career. After Colgate fought back to tie the game at 48-48 with 8:43 to play on a layup from Pat Campolieta and a three-pointer by Bill Kern, the Orange and Blue assembled the game-turning 14-2 run over the next 5:37. Junior co-captain Bryan Bailey (Hempstead, N.Y./South Side), who returned to action after missing the previous two games with sprained ankle, contributed four points in the pivotal stretch that put the Bison up 62-50 with 3:06 to play. He would finish the contest with 13 points - 11 of which came in the second half -- and a game-high six assists.
Colgate cut the margin to six twice -- the last time coming with 0:50 on the clock after a pair of Dave Hardy free throws -- but the Bison made three-of-five free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
It was the first game this season in which Bucknell trailed at the half and came back to win. It was also the first contest in which the Bison had two players record double-doubles. Werner added a career-high 11 rebounds to his 13 points, while Lalugba had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Dan Blankenship (Moundsville, W.Va./Wheeling Park) was also in double-figures for the Orange and Blue with 11 points.
Linebaugh led Colgate with 11 points off the bench, and Campolieta contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.
Bucknell will close out the home portion of its season when its hosts Lehigh on Wednesday, February 21. Tip-off in Davis Gymnasium is set for 7:30 p.m.
