HAMILTON, N.Y. - Senior Becki Marshall captured her third straight individual championship, and the Bucknell University women's cross country team cruised to its fourth consecutive Patriot League cross country title this afternoon at Colgate University.
The Bison women's team saw its top three individuals finish 1-2-3 for the third year in a row. With a meet-low 28 points, Bucknell finished nearly 50 points ahead of its nearest competitor, Army, in the team standings.
On the men's side, Bucknell took second at the league championship for the second straight season. The Bison had their top two harriers break the top-10 in the 72-man field, but were edged out by meet champion Army by 18 points (36-54).
Marshall, senior Chris Crowe and junior Theresa Dennis crossed the finish line in first, second, and third place, respectively for the women's team in the 73-competitor championship field. Marshall traversed the 6,000 meter course in 22:40.8, Crowe clocked a 22:50.4, and Dennis recorded a 22:52. Senior Kelly McConnell also broke the top-10 for the Bison, placing eighth in 23:20.8, while senior Kristin Ferrell completed the team scoring with her 14th-showing in 23:51.8. Marshall, Crowe, Dennis and McConnell took home All-Patriot League honors by virtue of their top-10 performances.
"Our women have been consistent all season, and I would have to say that today was their best race all year," praised first-year head coach Kevin Donner, who was named as the Patriot League Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. "I am very happy for the seniors for winning their fourth Patriot League title in a row."
Juniors Bryan Johnston and Greg Costello paced the men's team to its 12th straight season of finishing among the top two at the Patriot League Championship. Johnston came in fifth place in 25:22.4 to earn All-Patriot League recognition for the first time. He was just 14 seconds behind meet winner Will Wyche of Army. Costello placed seventh in 25:31.3 and came away with his second all-league title. Rounding out the Bison scoring were senior P.J. Ward (11th, 25:54.6), senior Travis Etters (13th, 25:59.2) and junior Lou Palma (20th, 26:17.7).
"Our men gave a nice effort, however Army was the better team today," remarked Donner. "Some of our men have been inconsistent from race to race, and now we have to regroup to prepare for the Mid-Atlantic Regional."
Both teams will travel to Lehigh University on Saturday, Nov. 10, for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet.
