LEWISBURG, PA - Sophomore forward Tim Szatko scored 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds, both game-highs, to lead Holy Cross to a convincing 69-45 victory over Bucknell in Davis Gymnasium Wednesday evening. The win snapped the Crusaders' 10-game losing streak in the series with the Bison and improved their overall record to 13-4 this season.
Szatko had 12 of his 18 points in the first half to propel the Crusaders to a 39-20 lead at the break. Holy Cross connected on 65.4% of its shots in the opening stanza and had eight different players scratch the scoring column.
Bucknell led 7-5 after the first five minutes, but when sophomore forward Brian Werner (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) sat down with his second foul Holy Cross began to put together the run that gave it control of the game. Patrick Whearty, who scored 11 points off the bench in the contest, tallied three layups in a 15-5 spurt to put Holy Cross up 20-10. The Crusaders then closed the half by outscoring the Bison 10-1 over the final 5:45.
Bucknell (8-8, 1-2 PL) picked up the defensive pressure and held the Crusaders without a field goal for the first seven-and-a-half minutes of the second half, but still could get no closer than 15. Holy Cross, which improved to 3-0 in Patriot League play for the first time since the 1992-93 season, led by as much as 29 before reaching the game's final margin of 24 points.
Senior center Josh Sankes joined Szatko and Whearty in double-figures with 10 points.
Sophomore Boakai Lalugba (East Orange, N.J./Bishop Francis Essex Catholic) led Bucknell with 11 points, while Dan Blankenship (Moundsville, W.Va./Wheeling Park) and Bryan Bailey (Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) each chipped in with 10.
Bucknell will host Army in Patriot League play on Saturday, January 20. Tip-off in Davis Gymnasium is set for 3:15 p.m.
