Bison Fall To Buffalo In Season Opener 3-2

Buffalo, N.Y. --- The Bucknell volleyball team, in its first competition of the season, lost a tough match to Buffalo, 3-2, in a five game marathon that lasted two hours and 35 minutes. This was the first of three games that the Bison are playing at the University at Buffalo Invitational this weekend.
The Bison found themselves pushed up against the wall after they dropped the first two games to Buffalo, 15-9 and 15-11. The squad responded well by winning the third game 17-15 and taking the fourth game 15-5. With the contest all even at two games a piece, the two teams entered the fifth and final game which is decided by rally points. Buffalo managed to squeak out the fifth game 15-12, and the match 3-2.
As a team, the Bison finished the five game set with 59 kills out of 178 attempts, 54 set assists, nine service aces, and 82 defensive digs. Leading the Orange and Blue was sophomore Jen Wrigley (Benicia, Calif./Benicia) with 13 kills and 10 digs, and junior Shannon Walker (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) with12 kills on 28 attempts for a .321 attack percentage, while only committing 3 errors.
Coach Opalski had this to say about the game, "I was very pleased with our overall effort and enthusiasm. Serve and serve receive errors plagued us at times but we executed well and had terrific contributions from 10-13 players."
The Bucknell volleyball team now stands with a 0-1 record on the season and will face Providence at noon on Saturday, September 2, in its second game of the Invitational, and Canisius at 5:00 p.m. to close out the tourney.
