COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: BUCKNELL 3, Canisius 1
Buffalo, N.Y. --- The Bucknell women's volleyball team earned its first victory of the season this evening when it beat Canisius, 3-1. The win came in the last contest of the University at Buffalo Invitational for the Bison.
The Orange and Blue dropped the first game to Canisius 15-12, but regrouped behind the leadership of their coach and proceeded to win the next three games 15-3, 15-4, and 15-7 respectively. The three-game sweep assured the Bison of a match victory over Canisius.
As a team, Opalski's squad finished the contest with 53 kills on 136 attempts for an excellent team hitting percentage of .265. This was by far the best game the Herd played in over the weekend. "I feel that we played much better in this evening's match and that we greatly improved our ball control. Our serve receive and serving game looked better in this contest and probably made the difference between winning and losing," said Coach Opalski on the match against Canisius.
Controlling the net for the Bucknell offense was junior Shannon Walker (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) who finished the four game set with 15 kills on 24 attempts for a hitting percentage of .542, setting a new career high. Walker's previous high for hitting percentage (at least 10 attempts) was .500, in a match against Pennsylvania during her freshman year.
The Bucknell women's volleyball team improves to 1-2 on the season and will compete again this Wednesday, September 6 against Penn State in Happy Valley at 7:30 p.m.
