LEWISBURG, Pa. --- Bucknell University senior strong safety Dave Evans (Kulpmont, Pa./Mount Carmel) was named to the Verizon Academic All-America Second Team. The team was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Evans becomes the 99th Bucknell student-athlete to receive national Academic All-America honors since the programs inception in 1952. He is the first player under head coach Tom Gadd and the 19th Bison football player overall to earn the distinct honor.
To be eligible for selection, the student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point-average. No athlete is eligible until he has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his institution. If chosen to the district team, the student-athlete is then placed on the national ballot. Evans was one of five Bison named to the District 2 team, and one of three (also Kevin Eiben and Eric Higgins) placed on the national ballot. District 2 covers players from schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C.
Evans, who was a repeat selection to the District 2 First Team, carries a 3.75 grade-point-average as a civil engineering major at Bucknell. A perennial member of the Dean's List and a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, he has one of the highest GPA's on the team. The 5-9, 185-pound senior has been an integral member of the Bison special teams units the past two seasons and saw plenty of action in Bucknell's nickel defense. Earlier this season he made his first career interception a memorable one, returning it a school-record 82 yards for a touchdown against Lafayette. He finished the year ranked third on the team with three interceptions for 119 return yards. Evans made 37 tackles this season, including 19 solo hits and tackle for a loss of seven yards. He also had three pass breakups and recovered a fumble.
