LEWISBURG, PA - The Bucknell men's water polo team will be traveling to Brown University this weekend to compete in the 2000 Men's Eastern Championship. After missing out on last years event Bucknell is back in contention to be the Eastern Champions. The Orange and Blue were assured a spot in the championship after beating Salem-International in the second game of the Southern Division Championships on Saturday, November 4. With the victory over the Tigers and an earlier win over Grove City, the Bison finished the tournament in third place after a tough loss to Navy on Sunday, November 5.
Bucknell enters the Eastern Championships seeded sixth, but it is the only team that is not nationally ranked. The Bison enter the tournament with another winning season record of 20-19, and will face the 12th ranked University of Massachusetts in the first round on Saturday, November 18 at 1:30 p.m.
Bucknell will be led offensively by senior standout Kevin Permisohn (Silver Springs, Md./Springbrook). Permisohn, a co-captain has a team-high 102 points for this season (43 goals, 59 assists) along with having a team-high 96 steals defensively. The Bison will also be looking for a strong offensive contribution form another senior standout, Tate Greditzer (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs). Greditzer, an All-ECAC selection, leads the team in goals (65), and has the second most points (98 points) for the season (65 goals, 12 assists). Along with Greditzer and Permisohn the Blue and Orange are going to need junior Ryan McCarty (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day School), the teams second-highest goal scorer with 64, to be a part of their offensive backbone.
On the defensive end the Bison are going to be looking for sophomore Daniel Lonnerdal (Davis, Calif./Davis) to add to his 55 steals this season. Lonnerdal has the second most steals on the team. Also expected to play a major role in Bucknell's weekend is junior goalkeeper David Kennedy (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day School). Kennedy has been a mainstay in the cage for the Orange and Blue this season, recording a school record 362 saves this season. He has posted a save percentage of .552 this year.
The first of a three game tournament will be the deciding factor on how well the bison do at the Championships. The championship game of the Eastern Championships will be held at Brown University at noon on Sunday, November 19, 2000.
