LEWISBURG, Pa. --- Bucknell head baseball coach Gene Depew announced recently that senior catcher Brad Gething (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and senior shortstop Chris Herron (Vienna, Va./Bishop O'Connell) have been elected captains for the 2001 season.
"This years captains selections by our team are more noteworthy than in previous years because there were 10 seniors from whom to choose and all 10 will play a significant role for us this season," commented Depew. "To be chosen from this strong group is a real tribute to Brad and Chris. I think it reflects the hard work and dedication they have both put into the program during the last three years."
Gething is coming off a career season in which he hit .333 and drove in 30 runs. When he wasn't behind the plate, he was at the plate as the team's designated hitter. Following the season he was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team as the DH. Gething, who hit five home runs, tied the school record with eight RBIs in a 4-for-5, two-home run performance at Lafayette on April 2. He also performed well on the bases last year, stealing 12 bags in 13 attempts.
"Brad will be counted on to be our main catcher and will probably hit in the middle of the order. His strengths include great foot speed and a very strong throwing arm," said Depew.
Herron started 22 games at shortstop last year and played solid defense for the Bison. His attitude on the field and in the clubhouse is his true strength. A career .228 hitter, Herron's left-handed bat will fit right into the Bucknell lineup.
"Chris will start in the middle infield," commented Depew. "He possesses very soft, quick hands and should be a solid left-handed bat for us in the lineup."
Depew summed up his teams' choices by saying, "Both Brad and Chris have the respect of the other players and I expect them to provide very solid leadership for us."
The Bison baseball team will begin its season on Saturday, February 17th when it plays a doubleheader at the Virginia Military Institute. First pitch is at 12:00 noon.
