BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- This morning the men's and women's cross country teams competed in the 11th annual Patriot League cross country championships, held at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus.
The women's team was successful at defending its league title for the third year in-a-row while the men's team came up a little short to the strong running of Army. The men's team, which had won the last three Patriot League titles, was unable to overcome the Black Knights who took the first four places in the 8,000-meter race. The women won the race on the strength of all five scoring runners finishing in the top-ten.
Junior Becki Marshall (Montgomery, N.Y./Pine Bush Central) led the pack in the women's race, successfully defending her individual title in a time of 21:15.3. The Orange and Blue took the next two spots as well with sophomores Andrea Beisser (Ames, Iowa/Ames) and Theresa Dennis (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Hanover) finishing together in second (21:37.2) and third (21:38.3). Rounding out the victorious women's cross country team were junior Christina Crowe (State College, Pa./State College) and senior Mandy Youmell (Weedsport, N.Y./Weedsport), finishing sixth (22:00.8) and ninth (22:31.9), respectively. All five of these individuals garnered All-League status for finishing in the top-ten.
The men's team had three individuals finish in the top-ten, earning themselves All-League honors. Sophomore Greg Costello (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) set the pace for the Orange and Blue by finishing in fifth place with a time of 25:13.0. The other two individuals finishing in the top-ten were seniors Kevin Weatherhill (Swedesboro, N.J./The Peddie School) and Brad Wertz (Altoona, Pa./Bellwood-Antis), in eighth (25:16.4) and ninth (25:18.9), respectively.
"Army really put it to us at the three mile point in the men's race. They have a good team, but were only eight seconds ahead of Wertz which means our team was not as tough as theirs today. On the women's side, I am very happy with their performance and of course the third consecutive Patriot League title," replied Coach Gulden when asked for post-race remarks.
The men's and women's cross country teams will now begin preparing for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships being held on the campus of Penn State, November 11.
