LEWISBURG, PA - The Patriot League announced its All-Decade
Cross Country Team earlier this week and eight former Bucknell
University runners, more than any other institution in the conference,
were among the 20 runners honored as members of the squad.
The team, comprised of 10 males and 10 females, includes student-athletes
from the inception of the league in 1990-91 up and through the
1999-2000 academic year. 13 of the 20 members honored on the
team account for all 20 individual titles that have been won at
the Patriot League Championships since the league began, including
six by former Bucknell runners.
Norbert Berenyi ('91), Matthew Deardorff ('92), Steve Clarke ('95),
Matthew Kodak ('95) and David Bronfenbrenner ('00) were the men
chosen to the All-Anniversary team. Julie Sweitzer ('99), Carly
Graytock ('00) and current co-captain, Becki Marshall ('02), were
the women selected to receive the honor.
Berenyi captured the league's inaugural individual title in 1990,
and led the Bison men to the first of their six team crowns.
The Northvale, New Jersey (Northern Valley Regional H.S.) native
crossed the finish line on Lehigh University's course in 25:32.50.
Deardorff won the title the following year, finishing with a time
of 25:44.3 at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City. He went on
to finish 43rd at the 1991 NCAA Championships in Arizona, helping
to lead the Bison to a 13th-place finish. A native of Newburg,
Pennsylvania (Chambersburg Area H.S.), he was a First Team Academic
All-American selection in both 1990 and 1991, and was a recipient
of an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship.
Clarke, who came to Bucknell from Guilderland, New York (Guilderland
Central H.S.), finished second (24:23) at the 1994 league championships
his senior year, and qualified to race as an individual entrant
at the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas. His time
at the 1994 Patriot League Championships remains the third-best
in conference history.
Kodak was the runner-up at the Patriot League finals in 1998,
finishing behind Army All-American Scott Goff with a time of 24:31.9. A native of Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania (Central Dauphin H.S.), Kodak's 1998 championship
time remains as the fifth-best in league history. He won the
Patriot League's Scholar-Athlete Award three times during his
career, and in 1998 was named to the USCCCA Division I All-Academic
Cross Country Team.
Bronfenbrenner attached his name to the list of Bucknell individual
champions by crossing the tape first at last fall's league championships
in a time of 25:33. He went on to garner all-region status by
finishing 20th in the Mid-Atlantic Regionals. A native of Allentown,
Pennsylvania (Salisbury Township), Bronfenbrenner was a three-time
All-Patriot League performer for the cross country team.
Sweitzer was a two-time Patriot League individual champion, garnering
the honor in both 1997 (19:04.3) and 1998 (17:39.4). Her time
in 1998 remains as the third-best in Patriot League Championship
meet history. A native of Glen Rock, Pennsylvania (Dallastown
H.S.), she led the women to their first-ever team title in 1998.
She competed as an individual in the 1997 NCAA Championships
in Greenville, South Carolina, finishing in 84th place (17:50.0).
Sweitzer was a Third Team Academic All-American in 1998, and
earned the Patriot League's Scholar-Athlete Award for women's
cross country three straight years.
Graytock captained the women's team to its third straight Patriot
League title last fall and its first-ever trip to the NCAA Championships.
The team finished 24thin the nation, and Graytock was 181st with
a time of 18:32.70. At the league championships she placed fifth
to earn All-Patriot League honors for the third year in a row.
A native of Forest City, Pennsylvania (Forest City H.S.), she
was presented with the Margaret L. Bryan Award at the senior banquet
for "outstanding achievement in more than one varsity sport."
Marshall, currently the top runner and a co-captain on the 2000 Bison squad, captured last year's individual title with a time of 18:17, setting a Metzgar Fields Course Championship meet record.
