Sport: Basketball
A four-year basketball starter and a First Team All-East Coast Conference selection in 1980 and 1981, Al Leslie set Bucknell modern game (45), season (564) and career (1973) scoring records, received All-America mention in 1981, and was chosen in the second round of the National Basketball Association draft by the Indiana Pacers. Leslie averaged 18.1 points per game in his brilliant career, and he held the career scoring mark by more than 100 points over his nearest competitor, despite playing without a 3-point line, until it was broken by Mike Muscala in 2013. Leslie's 20.9 ppg average in 1979-80 was second-best all-time, and the big year helped Bucknell to a 20-win campaign. Generally regarded as one of Bucknell's finest basketball players, Leslie was the recipient of the Christy Mathewson Award as the top athlete in his class, and he played briefly in the Continental Basketball Association. Leslie, who came to Bucknell from Baltimore's McDonogh School, later coached and taught at McDonogh and was an assistant coach on the Bison staff from 1984-86.Â
