Dear Bucknell Men’s Golf Community,
Growing up in a golf-crazed household, I knew I would forever be attached to the game. Ever since I first swung a golf club at the age of two, I always wanted to play golf at the highest level. I found that Division I golf was the perfect place for me to continue my passion and pursue exceptional academics. Bucknell University was the first place that I identified as having the perfect balance of academics and athletics that I desired. When Coach Binney gave me my first college offer in the middle of my junior year of high school, I instantly knew that it was the only offer I would ever need.
Ever since I first visited Bucknell, I knew that the university was home. I was enamored with the amazing views of the surrounding countryside and the beauty of the small campus, instantly falling in love with the tight-knit community that Bucknell fosters. The Bachman Center was another standout feature. With world-class facilities close to campus, the Bachman Center fits right in with the allure of the university.
It took some time for me to adjust to the life of a Division I student-athlete. It took a big mindset shift for me to learn how to handle the challenges of balancing rigorous academics with my athletic commitments. Missing multiple days of class and keeping up with the academic workload while at the same time playing in extremely intense golf tournaments, filled with 36-hole days, took me a while to adjust to. However, learning these skills has helped me so much in my ability to appreciate what being a student-athlete means.
It is really easy to look back on all of the tournaments I have played and analytically pick apart every aspect of my golf game, reviewing those rounds where I made stupid mistakes and dropped unnecessary shots. However, these few years have taught me how lucky I am to be able to travel to some amazing places and to carry out my passion, all while surrounded by the greatest teammates and friends I could ever have. When I look back at my time as a member of the Bucknell Golf Team, it will be all of the amazing moments and the synergy of the team that will stick out the most. Nothing is more valuable than the relationships I formed and the experiences that we lived through together. That will be what stays with me forever.
I would have never had the opportunity to appreciate what Bucknell and the golf team have meant to me if not for the gracious alumni, supportive parents, and great friends who support our program. You are the foundation of everything that the golf team gets to do and gets to achieve. Your kindness and your contributions help our team compete at the highest level and allow us to be on the hunt for the Patriot League Championship every single year. Everyone on the golf team is extremely grateful for what your support means to the program. None of this is possible without you.
’ray Bucknell!
