Dear Bucknell Spiked Shoe Community,
Looking back on my college journey, I’m reminded of how close I came to choosing another path: committing to run for Lehigh. Just hours after making that decision, a mysterious email made me reconsider, and I knew I had to come to Bucknell.
My path here may be unconventional, but I believe I was guided to Bucknell for a reason. Despite the sacrifices and challenges of becoming a successful student-athlete, I would choose this journey again and again because of what Bucknell Track and Field means to me.
Being a collegiate athlete is not for the faint of heart, yet my time at Bucknell has filled me with gratitude for the friends, coaches, and professors who’ve supported me as a student, athlete, and person. On the track, my coaches and teammates have supported and inspired me in all aspects. One of the best parts about track and field is seeing my teammates achieve their goals and knowing they have my back just as much as I have theirs. No matter the outcome of the race, I feel valued for who I am beyond athletics. Bucknell’s track and field team has allowed me to pursue excellence, and it’s this community of passion and care that I’m honored to represent every time I toe the line.
Entering my senior year, I reflect on my experiences off the track that have shaped me. Bucknell’s biomedical engineering program has challenged my skills and prepared me for the workforce, while my research with Dr. Charles Kim has given me a sense of true ownership. And finally, serving as a leader in the faith communities of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Women’s Athlete Bible Study groups has strengthened my faith and relationships with teammates and Christ. Choosing to run at Bucknell opened doors I hadn’t imagined.
Serving as a co-captain this year fills me with pride. Past captains’ dedication and talent have inspired me, and leading this team has taught me teamwork, unity, and compassion. Supporting my teammates has not only encouraged their growth in athletics and beyond, but has also inspired my own.
In my final year as a Bison, I am deeply grateful for the Spiked Shoe Club’s support on and off the track. I cherish every moment here, knowing the friendships and experiences I’ve gained will guide me long after I leave. ‘The people make the place’, and you’ve made Bucknell the place for me.
'ray Bucknell!
