Sullivan, Thomsen Earn Patriot League Player of Week Citations, Share Bison of Week Honors

LEWISBURG, Pa. – It's an all-soccer edition of Bison of the Week, as Collin Sullivan from the men's team and Louisa Thomsen from the women's squad have been recognized after turning in outstanding performances in an unbeaten week for the two teams. In addition, Sullivan was picked as the Patriot League Defender of the Week and Thomsen as the Patriot League Midfielder of the Week for their respective sports.
Sullivan, a junior center back from La Grange Park, Ill., led Bucknell's defensive efforts in a 1-0-1 week against George Mason and Colgate. Sullivan played 74 minutes in a 3-1 win over George Mason and played 77 minutes to help the Bison keep their second clean sheet of the season in a 0-0 draw against Patriot League rival Colgate.
On Tuesday against George Mason, the Bison stormed back from a 1-0 deficit with three second-half goals. While the Bison led 2-1, the Patriots got in behind the back line and fired a shot that beat the goalkeeper. Sullivan got back to the goal line quickly, and headed the shot over the bar to keep the Bison in front.
Sullivan was everywhere in the match against Colgate and helped the Bison hold strong on eight Raiders corner kicks. He also got involved in the attack with two shots. His first attempt was a bicycle kick that forced a save. He later had a free header in the box that he missed just wide of the net.
Meanwhile, Thomsen was all over the field in the women's team's 3-1 win over Lehigh in the Patriot League opener on Saturday. She finished with a goal and an assist while leading a dominant effort from the Bison midfield. Bucknell's ability to control the center of the park led to a 33-7 shot advantage.
The Waterbury Center, Vt., native scored the game's opening goal in the 29th minute when she headed home Ingrid Murphy's corner kick. Thomsen also had a hand in Bucknell's third goal, coming from a scrum in the box in the 71st minute. She was first to a loose ball and fired a shot that was blocked in front. The rebound fell to Dani Howard, who took a touch to her left and slotted a shot inside the right post. It was a key insurance tally, as Lehigh pulled one back on a penalty kick in the 84th minute.
Thomsen has provided a tireless work rate all season, averaging more than 75 minutes per game while winning balls all over the field. She now has two goals and two assists and is tied for second on the team with six points. Her 21 shot attempts are third-most on the team.
The Bison men are 1-0-1 in Patriot League play and are tied for third in the early table, two points behind 2-0 Lehigh and Boston University. All five games on the opening day of Patriot League play on the women's side featured a winner, and Bucknell joins Loyola, Boston University, Lafayette, and Army on three points.
It's another two-game week for the men's squad. The Bison host Saint Joseph's in a non-league affair on Tuesday before traveling to Boston University on Sunday. The women's team is back at home on Saturday, hosting Holy Cross at 2 p.m.
