LEWISBURG, Pa.- Bucknell sophomore heavyweight Will Greenberg represented the United States in the 22nd Maccabiah Games in Netanya, Israel this past summer and collected three medals. Maccabi USA Wrestling won 12 medals across men's freestyle, Greco-Roman and beach wrestling and Greenberg was responsible for winning three. He won gold in the Freestyle 125kg, silver in the Greco-Roman 130kg, and bronze in the Beach +100 kg competitions.Â
"It was an honor to represent our country by wearing that singlet," Greenberg said. "Gold was always the goal. I'm looking forward to doing the same in the Orange and Blue."
The 22nd Maccabiah ran July 1–13, 2026, a year late, with about 5,000 Jewish athletes from 55 countries. Organizers postponed the 2025 Games when the Israel–Iran war shut down travel; the banners kept the original "Maccabiah 2025 — More Than Ever" branding. The Maccabiah is often called the Jewish Olympics. The IOC has recognized it as a regional sports event since 1961, and it is held every four years, generally the year after the Summer Olympics. The first edition was held in 1932.Â
In the Freestyle group, he defeated Nitika Goubarets and Hanan Haimov to win gold. One of his two wins was via superiority.Â
"Super proud of Will as he represented the USA and Bucknell University very well with his gold medal performance at the Maccabiah Games," Bucknell head coach Dan Wirnsberger said. "He is very committed and dedicated to both wrestling and his Jewish faith. He competed with grit and toughness and gained valuable experience with his gold medal performance. That gained confidence will carry over into his collegiate season."
Greenberg and the Bison head to the Michigan State Open this weekend.Â
