SANTA CLARA, Calif.- Bucknell men's water polo (11-10), down 12-7 in the fourth period, attempted a furious comeback against Saint Mary's (7-10) but fell short, losing 12-10, on Friday at the first day of the Julian Fraser Memorial. The Bison and Gaels faced off in a rubber match that went the way of the first-year program from California.Â
Saint Mary's defense clamped down on Bucknell's offense, holding the Bison offense to only five scorers. Jack Dillane and Jovan Udovicic led Bucknell with three goals.Â
The two teams played on even terms in the first quarter and second half. The difference resided in the second period where the Gaels outscored Bucknell 4-2.Â
Both squad tallied three goals in the opening period. Saint Mary's slipped ahead for a 7-5 halftime lead on the strength of a 4-0 run after the Bison forged ahead 4-3.Â
Saint Mary's extended its lead to 10-7 by the third period's conclusion and moved ahead 12-7 early in the final stanza. Bucknell refused to yield as Dillane and Udovicic tinged the twine three times.Â
The Bison has a credible chance, having cut the deficit to two goals with 1:50 remaining. However, Saint Mary's defense resolved itself, Bucknell's final attempts could not find the cage, and the Bison dropped its third straight match.Â
The Orange & Blue remain in California tomorrow for matches against #1 (Division III) Pomona-Pitzer and #13 Pacific.Â
