Bucknell and Bowling Green on Monday will square off for the very first time. The Bison are 1-8 all-time against Buffalo, but this will be the first meeting with the Bulls since Dec. 18, 1965. Bucknell won the very first meeting with Buffalo, 38-11 on Feb. 14, 1907. The Bulls have won the last eight, all coming between 1917-65. In the last meeting, Matt McGonigle had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Bucknell, but Buffalo prevailed 71-62 on its home floor.
Bucknell heads to Florida looking to shake off a four-game losing streak, the last two of which came on the road against Power Five foes Pittsburgh and No. 14/16 St. John's. Prior to this stretch, the Bison started the season 2-0 with wins over Delaware and Mount St. Mary's.
The Pitt and St. John's games followed similar scripts, with the Bison getting off to strong starts only to see the games get away from them in the second half. The Pitt game was just a four-point margin with six minutes to go in the first half, but the Panthers stretched it to 13 at halftime and then blew it open with a 22-2 run to start the second half. At St. John's on Thursday, the Bison jumped out to an 8-2 lead and the Red Storm didn't take their first lead until the 10:45 mark of the first half, but they shot 64.5% (20-31) in the second half compared to Bucknell's 4-for-22 (.182).
Freshman Amon Dörries has led the team in scoring in five of the team's six games, and he owns a team-best 13.8 ppg average. Ruot Bijiek has scored at a 12.5 ppg clip, and Jayden Williams averages 9.3 ppg, 4.0 apg, and leads the Patriot League in 3-point percentage (.625).
This week's opponents are off to good starts, as Bowling Green comes in with a 3-2 record while Buffalo is a perfect 5-0.
The Falcons started the year with home wins over Texas State (83-48). Bethany (120-65), and Le Moyne (83-60), but they have dropped their last two to Davidson (91-87) and William & Mary (82-74). Javontae Campbell is posting 20.0 ppg to lead the team. A Third Team All-MAC selection last year, Campbell ranked fourth nationally and set a school record with 90 steals last year, and he already has 22 in five games this season.
Buffalo went 9-22 last season but is already more than halfway to that total after downing Southern Miss (85-79), Green Bay (83-76), DePaul (66-53), RIT (80-64), and Vermont (94-90). All but the DePaul game have been played at home. The Bulls also have a 20+ ppg scorer in Daniel Freitag, who is in his first season with Buffalo after transferring from Wisconsin. Freitag dropped 33 on Vermont last time out. Third-leading scorer Angelo Brizzi (13.0 ppg) was teammates with Bucknell's Achile Spadone at Davidson in 2023-24.
Bucknell returns home next Sunday to face Cornell at 2 p.m. in Sojka Pavilion. The high-scoring Big Red have won three straight, all against Patriot League foes in Lafayette, Army, and Colgate. They will host Division III Misericordia on Wednesday before heading to Lewisburg.
