QUEENS, N.Y. – Bryce Hopkins and Ian Jackson scored 20 points apiece to lead No. 14/16 St. John's to a 97-49 win over visiting Bucknell on Thursday night at sold-out Carnesecca Arena. Amon Dorries scored 12 points and Ruot Bijiek had 11 for the Bison, who are now 2-4 on the season after falling to a Power Five conference team for the second time this week.
Bucknell struggled in the rebounding and ball-handling departments against a long and fast team that won 31 games last season and came into this one averaging 99 points per game. The Red Storm (3-1) finished with a 48-26 rebounding edge, including 17 offensive boards, and they forced 24 turnovers.
The Bison got out to a strong start and led for the game's first nine minutes. Dorries' layup off a Jayden Williams feed made it 8-2, prompting an early St. John's timeout. The Bison led 15-11 after Dorries' fourth bucket of the night, but the Red Storm started to warm up after a Bryce Hopkins 3-pointer. Zuby Ejiofor's dunk gave them their first lead of the game at 16-15 at the 10:45 mark.
Achile Spadone tied the game at 18 with a 3-pointer with 5:35 left in the half, but the Bison were outscored 23-7 the rest of the way. Two straight second-chance 3-pointers from Lefteris Liotopoulos and Ruben Prey moved the Red Storm's lead to double figures for the first time, and they went to the locker room with a 41-25 lead.
St. John's held the Bison to only four field goals in the second half while hitting 20 of 31 (.645), and the Red Storm pulled away.
Spadone finished with nine points, Williams had five with four assists and three steals, and Matt Lange registered his first career point with a free throw late in the game.
St. John's had five players score in double figures and ended at 50.8 percent from the field after a 2-for-13 start. The Bison shot 29.4 percent overall and were cold from long range (4-21).
Next up for the Bison is a trip to Florida for the Skechers Fort Myers Tip-Off. Bucknell will play Bowling Green on Monday and Buffalo on Wednesday, with streaming coverage on passthaballlive.com.
