LEWISBURG, Pa. – After posting a pair of victories during the opening week of the men's basketball season, Bucknell swept the Patriot League's first weekly awards of the campaign. Sophomore point guard Jayden Williams was selected as the league's Player of the Week, and freshman center Amon Dörries was picked as the Rookie of the Week.
Williams made his first two career starts last week and quarterbacked the Bison to wins over Delaware (78-70) at home and defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Mount St. Mary's (73-62) on the road. The Bronx native set career highs across the board with 13 points, six assists and four rebounds in the Delaware win, and he helped ice the game with two big free throws with 15 seconds remaining.
Against Mount St. Mary's, Williams tallied 12 points, six rebounds, and five assists with no turnovers. He beat the halftime buzzer with a 3-pointer to give Bucknell an eight-point lead at the break, and then after the Mountaineers made a late run, his dagger pull-up jumper with 1:15 to go restored that eight-point margin.
Williams has totaled 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists with only two turnovers through two games, and he is 5-for-9 from 3-point range.
Meanwhile, Dörries made a big splash in his first two collegiate games. On opening night he tallied 20 points on 8-for-10 shooting against Delaware. That was tied for the second-most points by a Bucknell freshman in a season opener and was the most ever against a Division I opponent. The Potsdam, Germany, native followed that performance with 15 points on 7-for-14 shooting against Mount St. Mary's. One of the biggest sequences of the game came after the Mount had cut a double-digit deficit to one at the six-minute mark of the second half. Dörries followed with five straight points on a driving layup and a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
Dörries is Bucknell's first Patriot League Rookie of the Week since Deuce Turner on Feb. 2, 2021. He leads the team in scoring (17.5 ppg) and field-goal percentage (.625) through two games.
The Bison will look to make it a 3-0 start when they travel to Princeton on Tuesday night.
