WEST POINT, N.Y.- Bucknell (7-9, 4-3 Patriot League) ended up on the wrong side of a sweep (18-25, 20-25, 27-29) in Friday night action at Army (11-5, 5-2 Patriot League). The two teams, tied for third place, battled for the spot and the Black Knights of the Hudson retained possession. The Bison dropped its third conference game, all of which have come against the top three teams in the circuit.
Army edged Bucknell 50-42 in kills and 64-56 in digs. The Black Knights enjoyed a decisive advantage in aces, tallying nine to Bucknell's zero.
Tijana Kostic led Bucknell with 12 kills. Bella Rodriguez tallied ten kills. Caleigh O'Connell provided 33 assists for a neat 11 per set average.
Chloe Murakami, one of the PL's best attackers, displayed her talents with a game-high 20 kills, led Army in digs with 15, and served up three aces. Setter Naomi Chinchar supplied an eye-popping 45 assists.
The first set started all Bucknell with the Orange & Blue sprinting up 4-0. Army fought back but the Bison continued to hold the lead until the Cadets used a 6-2 run to move ahead 17-14. Bucknell crept within 19-18 but Army turned back the frontal charge with a 6-0 set-winning run.
The second set featured a similar script as the opening act. The Bison led early before the Black Knights made a 6-2 run when Bucknell led 12-11. The Orange & Blue again made the score 19-18. This time, the Black Knights' run was 6-2 instead of 6-0 but the set went to Army.
The Bison fought desperately to avoid another sweep. Bucknell led early for the third consecutive set before Army again seized the lead while the score was in the teens. This time, the Bison did not allow a decisive run and down three points rallied to tie the contest at 21-21. The teams traded points with Bucknell answering every Army score. The Bison had set point at 27-26 before heartbreak arrived like a cavalry charge. Army reeled off three straight kills, two by Murakami, including the winning one, for the 29-27 set victory and match triumph.
Bucknell travels to Navy tomorrow for a match at 6 p.m.
