LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Volleyball team improved its winning streak to eight games and tied its best start in program history with a 3-0 weekend at the Ellicott Hotels Western New York Invitational. Sophomore Sidney Shaffer played a key role in the Orange & Blue's perfect weekend and received Bison of the Week for her vital contributions.Â
Shaffer owned the court, collecting 36 kills and 47 total points. She was brutally efficient in matches versus Canisius and Youngstown State. Against the Golden Griffins, Shaffer hit .414 (16-of-29) and she melted the Penguins's defense with a sizzling .722 (13-of-18) hitting percentage. She created a towering presence at the net with 11 total blocks. Defensively, she added 17 digs.Â
The reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year dominates the circuit's leaderboards. Her .357 hitting percentage ranks third, her 37 blocks are fourth, and her 119 points are sixth. Her outstanding statistical achievements have the Bison at 8-1 and up top of the conference standings.Â
The sophomore leads the Bison in blocks, hitting percentage and points, ranks second in kills (87), and third in service aces (10). She entered the season on the Preseason All-League Team and her play has exceeded the accolade.Â
Shaffer and the Bison return to action this weekend at Davis Gym. Bucknell opens its home and conference schedule with a pair of games starting with Holy Cross (Sept. 20) and Army (Sept. 21).Â
