EUGENE, Ore.- Evelyn Bliss finished eighth to qualify for the finals of the women's javelin throw at the Olympic Trials' First Round on Friday. The competition was held at Hayward Field, known as Track Town USA. The Bison thrower gained entry to Sunday's finals, where the top three throwers will head to the Olympics.
"Evie looked good in training, so the goal going in was to hit a personal record and let the chips fall where they may," said throws coach Ryan Protzman, who was present. "She looked relaxed. She was having fun. We discussed those things after watching the men's javelin throw earlier in the week. I'm excited for her to compete against the other 11 women on Sunday."

The contest consisted of two evenly distributed flights of 12 throwers, with the top 12 qualifying for the finals. Bliss was slotted into the first flight as the ninth participant. Each thrower was only allotted three attempts, necessitating a fast start and maximizing the pressure not to misuse a chance.
She started strong with a throw of 173-7, which tied her previous best. It was a promising sign for the freshman thrower. The mark placed her third on the list.
Her second throw of 175-1 proved her finest of the flight. It slotted her fourth in the proceedings and set a new personal best, breaking her mark of 173-7 established at the Hurricane College Invitational in March.
Her third throw went wide of the throwing field, rendering it a fault. Nevertheless, Bliss remained situated at fourth after the first flight's conclusion.
The four throwers in the second flight dropped Bliss down four spots but eighth place was more than enough to send Bliss through to Sunday's finals.
Bliss credited her success to a pre-competition routine and possessing a calm countenance.Â
"I'm so excited," said Bliss. "I had great warmups and I was just having fun and felt relaxed. I'm excited to hit a personal record and make it to the finals. I'm also excited to see Coach Protzman in braids on Sunday!"
Kara Winger threw 206-8 to win the first round. Maggie Malone Hardin placed second on her toss of 204-9 and Avione Allgood finished third (194-9).
The finals will be held this Sunday at 7:10 p.m. at Hayward Field and will be streamed on Peacock.
