LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sean Keys went 4-for-5 with a home run and a double in support of Mikey Myro, who pitched five strong innings in his first career start, and the Bucknell baseball team routed Le Moyne 11-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Depew Field. Jacob Corson added three hits and Grant Voytovich homered and drove in four runs for the Bison, who improved to 6-5 on the season heading into a three-game series at No. 22 Campbell this weekend.
Bucknell pounded out 14 hits, six of which went for extra bases, but Myro (2-0) was the story of the day for the Bison. All six of the sophomore righthander's previous career appearances came in relief, but he earned the start in this one and had the Dolphins' hitters off balance throughout his five innings of work. Myro allowed just a run on three hits and walked only one. His only blemish was a solo homer off the bat of Nick Nevins leading off the fourth inning. Nevins came in hitting .429 and went 2-for-3 with a walk.
Myro had plenty of offensive support. Corson led off the bottom of the first with a single, went to third on Keys' opposite-field double, and scored on Voytovich's ground ball. Andrew Swenson and Corson started a four-run rally in the third with back-to-back doubles. Keys singled, Voytovich doubled home a run, and then after Dewey Roden (0-1) got a couple of big outs, Michael Trommer flipped a single into left field to score two and make it a 5-0 game.
Nevins's second homer of the season got the Dolphins on the board in the fourth, but the Bison got the run right back when Michael Chiaravallo led off with a walk and scored one out later on Corson's third hit of the day.
Bucknell broke it open with three more runs in the in the seventh. Keys led off the frame with a single, and then Voytovich hit a tracer to left that skimmed the top of the fence and went out for his 11th career home run. The Bison tacked on one more in the inning on a sac fly by Nic Adamo.
Keys closed out the scoring with a majestic 429-foot home run over the wall in right-center. It was Keys fifth home run of the season and 19th of his career, tying him for eighth place on Bucknell's all-time list along with Kevin Silverman, Russ Lindberg, and Ben Yoder. With his first career four-hit game, Keys raised his season batting average to .514, his on-base percentage to .654, and his OPS to a whopping 1.735.
In addition to the strong start from Myro, the Bison received outstanding relief work from Graeme Carroll, Jonathan Adelmann, and Dante Pavone, who combined for 3.1 shutout innings with only two hits allowed and two strikeouts apiece. Myro, who earned his first career win in relief against UMass last week, now has a 0.79 ERA in 11.1 innings of work this season.
Next up for the Bison is a three-game set this weekend at Campbell. The Fighting Camels are ranked No. 22 in this week's D1Baseball.com poll. They brought an 8-3 record into Tuesday's home game with No. 16 North Carolina and already boast a win over No. 11 East Carolina and two against No. 17 UC Santa Barbara.
