SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Bucknell baseball team had a solid opening day at the plate but could not overcome a handful of big innings by the opposition and fell 14-3 to Towson and 17-9 to Wofford on Saturday at King Field.
The Bison collected 22 hits on the day, including the first collegiate hits for juniors Matt Alexander and Brady Karp, and freshmen Chris Morabito, Luke Nascimento, and Andrew Swenson. All-Patriot League third baseman Sean Keys reached base all five times against Towson and then started the scoring against Wofford with a two-run homer in the top of the first, his 15th career blast.
Bucknell's offensive prowess was undone by some defensive lapses and command issues on the mound. The Bison made eight errors on the day, which led to 12 unearned runs, and the pitchers issued 21 walks. Bucknell allowed runs in only seven of its 17 defensive innings, but in six of those innings, the opponent scored three or more.
The Bison have one more game to go on this opening weekend trip to South Carolina. Bucknell and Towson will meet again on Sunday morning, with first pitch now slated for 10:30 a.m.
Towson 14, Bucknell 3
Towson stormed out of the gates early after suffering a 12-11 walk-off loss to Wofford on Friday night. The Tigers scored four unearned runs off Hadley Maxwell in the top of the first and then added six more in the third, with all 10 of those runs coming with two outs.
Consecutive two-run knocks by Taye Robinson and Jordan Peyton gave Towson the first-inning lead. Three straight walks started the third-inning rally, with the big blows a two-run single by Jeremy Wagner and a three-run homer by Bryce Frederick.
Bucknell got on the board in the fourth inning when Billy Kender led off with a single and went to third on Michael Trommer's double. Nic Adamo followed with a two-run single up the middle.
Towson put the game away with four more runs in the top of the sixth, with Frederick adding his second home run of the day and Sean Britt following three batters later with a three-run blast.
Tyler Dunn's RBI ground out in the ninth finished the scoring.
Keys went 3-for-3 along with a walk and a hit by pitch. Adamo added two hits for the Bison. Frederick drove in four runs and scored three times to lead Towson's 11-hit attack.
Mikey Myro was a bright spot on the mound for the Bison, pitching 3.2 scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts.
Wofford 17, Bucknell 9
Bucknell put its youth on display in the second game of the day, with four freshmen in the starting lineup in the 5-8 spots in the batting order. Swenson (3-4) and Nascimento (2-4) combined for five hits, and Alexander, Dunn, and Grant Voytovich also had two-hit games as the Bison outhit Wofford 14-12.
Bucknell led 2-0 after only two batters, as Keys yanked a Zac Cowan pitch over the wall in right. Michael Chiavarallo walked with two outs, Morabito singled, and Nascimento reached on an infield hit to make it 3-0.
Wofford, which went 40-19 last season, got a run back in the bottom of the first when Dixon Black scored from third before Brice Martinez was caught stealing from first. The Terriers then flipped the game around with seven runs in the bottom of the third.
Bison starter Tyler O'Neill got a big strikeout with one out and men at second and third, but Martinez followed with a two-run single to tie it and then the inning was prolonged by three errors, which led to five unearned runs.
Bucknell cut into the deficit with a single run in the fourth on Corson's RBI ground out and two more in the fifth on Swenson's two-run double. Down just 8-6, the Bison conceded six runs in the bottom of the fifth, with much of the damage again coming with two outs. Four straight singles led to two runs, but an error and a strikeout-passed ball extended the inning, leading to four more runs.
Dunn doubled home a run in the sixth, and Alexander delivered a two-run single in the ninth to close out the scoring.
Bucknell used four pitchers in the game, with Nikhil Patel working two scoreless frames in relief. Mason Compton allowed one run in 3.1 innings for Wofford to get the win. Michael Toole went 3-for-3 and scored three runs from the leadoff spot for the Terriers.
