LEWISBURG, Pa.- Ashley Sofilkanich dominated in the Bucknell women's basketball 71-62 win over the Boston Terriers on Saturday and the Patriot League voters noticed, awarding the freshman with the Patriot League PenFed Credit Union Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week honor. It is Sofilkanich's fourth time winning the award.Â
"We are all proud of the work she's doing and the mentality she brings to the gym," said head coach Trevor Woodruff. "Our team's improvement is a directed reflection of her and her teammates' continued growth."
Sofilkanich owned the paint, collecting 21 points to lead all scorers. The freshman forward was systematically ruthless in her shooting, going 9-of-14 from the field and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe. Sofilkanich has found her second gear, has four 20+ point games, and has scored double-digits in her last seven out of nine games. The New Jersey native averages 12.1 ppg overall and 13.0 ppg in Patriot League play.Â
Her efforts were not purely offensive. Sofilkanich, for the second time, kept the Patriot League's Preseason Player of the Year, Caitlin Weimar, in check. She was held to 10 points and nine rebounds, well below her season averages in both categories.Â
It was Bucknell's first win at Boston since the 2018-19 season, and it improved Bucknell's winning streak to three games, currently the longest run in the Patriot League. The Bison are now 5-6 in the league. The win gave Bucknell the season sweep over the Terriers.Â
Sofilkanich has developed into one of the Patriot League's brightest young stars. She ranks second in the Patriot League in blocks (2.0) and 13th in points (12.1). She ranks first on the Bison in blocks, second in points and rebounds (5.8), and shooting percentage (.455).Â
The Bucknell women's basketball program does not lack Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors. The Bison entered the 2023-24 season with 90 all-time laurels, most in Patriot League history. Sofilkanich's four are the most since Cecilia Collins earned four in 2021-22. The 2013-14 team earned ten, with Claire DeBoer notching eight. DeBour and Lindsey Hollobaugh (2003-24) share the Bison and Patriot League record with eight in a season.
Bucknell returns to action on Valentine's Day with a midweek meeting at Lehigh.Â
