LEWISBURG, Pa. – On a weekend during which the Bucknell Brotherhood was celebrated, the Blue team defeated the Orange squad by a score of 66-57 in Sojka Pavilion in the annual Alumni Game last Saturday at Sojka Pavilion. Darryl Shazier '11 connected for six 3-point baskets, four of which came in the second half, to lead the Blue team to the win.
The game was knotted 27-27 at the half, but Shazier and Bucknell head coach John Griffin III '08 got into a rhythm together early in the second half to turn the tide. Griffin led all players in the game with four assists – most coming on Shazier threes – and buried three of his own from beyond the arc. Stephen Watson, playing in honor of his father, the late John Watson '89, had 13 points, four rebounds, and a pair of assists for the winners. Other members of the Blue team included Bucknell's director of digital strategy Mike Coleman (7 pts, 1 asst), Matt Fiery '10 (5 pts, 4 rebs, 2 assts), and Kevin Wenk '96 (2 pts, 6 rebs, 1 asst).
Dom Hoffman '16 paced the Orange attack with 19 points and a game-high six rebounds, while Tim Woollum (11 pts), son of Bobby Woollum '89, and Dave Steigerwald '96 (10 pts) also finished in double figures. Hall-of-Famers Chris Seneca '87 and Mike Joseph '90, the oldest players on the court, combined for 14 pts, seven assists, and five rebounds for the Orange team. Bison director of basketball operations Mike Walley rounded out the scoring for the Orange with three points and four rebounds.
There were also several alumni in attendance at the event who did not play in the game, including 91-year-old Barry Parker from the Class of 1954. The list also included Hall-of-Fame coaches Charlie Woollum and Pat Flannery '80, former assistant coach Terry Conrad, Doug Allen '88, Keane Bell '91, Kevin Blackwell '85, Hall-of-Famer Mike Butts '90, Keith Fenton '91, Rob Joy '91, Malik Malone '91, Gordon Mboya '97, Ed Sigl '84, Mark Treiber '97, and Bobby Woollum '89.
Bucknell's 1989 East Coast Conference championship team was honored during a team lunch and again at halftime of the game against Colgate later in the day. Led by Coach Woollum, that squad, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, finished 23-8 and 11-3 in the ECC. The Bison defeated Rider, Hofstra (in OT), and Lafayette in the ECC Tournament at Towson, and then they fell to Syracuse in Dallas in the program's second NCAA Tournament appearance. That team had four Hall-of-Famers on the roster. Ted Aceto, Mike Butts, and Mike Joseph were all double-digit scorers, while Bill Courtney was a freshman just getting his brilliant career going. Two other double-digit scorers on the '89 squad were Greg Leggett and John Watson. Both tragically passed away in recent years, but the families of both Bison legends were in attendance on Saturday.
Also on Saturday, Griffin introduced the alumni group to the Bucknell Basketball Brotherhood concept and distributed tee shirts adorned with the brand new Brotherhood logo. The Brotherhood is meant to unite different eras of Bison Basketball, to celebrate what it means to have worn the Orange & Blue, and to foster a network where alumni support each other and the current members of the program.
