LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Patriot League office announced on Tuesday that Bucknell freshman Sidney Shaffer won the Patriot League Rookie of the Week award for her pivotal performances in Bucknell's weekend sweep of Lafayette and Lehigh. The middle blocker's presence at the net played the leading role in the Bison's first 2-0 road PL weekend since 2005.Â
"Sidney had a great weekend for us by having a massive presence in the front row," said head coach Tyler Hagstrom. "She sparkled throughout the weekend and her timely kills, most notably in the Lehigh match, which sealed the win for the team."
Shaffer collected 27 kills and averaged a hitting percentage of .300 against 9-4 Lehigh and always tenacious Lafayette. Her combined 12 blocks put the Leopards and Mountain Hawks' attacks at a standstill. Overall, the freshman gathered 33.5 points in the two games.Â
Her 16 kills against Lehigh were the second on the team behind Catherine Jamison's 17, but her hitting percentage of .364 ensured that Shaffer made her attacks count. She led the Bison defense with seven blocks to clinch Bucknell's first win at Lehigh since 2010.
Against Lafayette, she was second on the team in kills (11) and led the squad in blocks (5) to power the Bison to a four-set victory and move Bucknell into 2-2 in Patriot League play.Â
Shaffer is second in the Patriot League in blocks per set (1.23) and fourth overall (48).Â
Shaffer and the Bison return to action with games at Loyola (Md.) and Navy this weekend.Â
