LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell wrestling team put together another comeback effort at Davis Gym Friday evening, but Columbia sealed the final two bouts to win 25-12. The Lions won six of the 10 bouts overall and picked up bonus points in four of them to send the Bison to 6-6 (4-3 EIWA). Five of the matchups were decided by two points or less, and four of Bucknell's losses were to nationally-ranked wrestlers.
Columbia jumped out to a 12-0 lead before Dorian Crosby stopped the bleeding and got the Bison on the board. The senior sat even with Billy McChesney in the third period with an escape apiece before benefiting from a late stall call to collect a 2-1 decision for his eighth straight victory.
Columbia responded with a technical fall at 125, but the Bison went on to win the next three bouts by narrow margins to cut the deficit to 16-12.
The 9-0 run began with Kurt Phipps (133) securing a narrow 2-1 decision over Angelo Rini. The pair were scoreless headed into the third period before a reversal with 1:29 remaining gave Phipps the points he needed for his 26th win of the season.
Darren Miller also pulled off a narrow victory, defeating No. 21 Matt Kazimir 2-0 thanks to an early takedown, which ended up as the only points by either grappler through all three periods.
Dylan Chappell made his first dual appearance since Jan. 15 and didn't disappoint. Wrestling at 149 pounds, the sophomore went back and forth with Danny Fongaro before an escape with 11 seconds remaining gave him a dramatic 7-6 win and brought the Bison within four of tying at 16-12 with two bouts to go. Chappell is now 5-0 in duals and reached 21 wins on the season.
At 157, Riley Bower also went back and forth against No. 24 Cesar Alvan and tied things up at 3-3 with an escape in the final 15 seconds of the third, but Alvan took the bout 4-3 with 1:19 of riding time. The loss put the dual out of reach, as the Lions carried a 19-12 lead into the final bout.
Bucknell is back at Davis Gym on Saturday to host Navy at 2 p.m.
