LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell wrestling's Kurt Phipps was named Bison of the Week on Tuesday for his performance at the 2023 Southern Scuffle tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Sunday and Monday. It's the second time in his career Phipps has earned Bison of the Week honors.
Phipps, a junior from Irwin, Pa., placed fourth in the 133-pound bracket after moving past several nationally-ranked wrestlers and finishing the weekend with a 6-2 record. Ranked No. 22 by FloWrestling and No. 32 by Intermat himself, Phipps improved to a team-best 19-7 overall in the 2022-23 season.
Highlighting the tournament was Phipps' 7-4 decision over No. 17/16 Ramazan Attasauov of Iowa State, who entered the tournament as the second-seeded wrestler at 133 pounds. The win sent Phipps on to the consolation semifinals.
Phipps opened the tournament with his second pin of the season in the opening round of 32, defeating Little Rock's Cael Keck. Once dropping to the consolation bracket with a loss to No. 4 Iowa State's Zach Redding, he rattled off five straight wins including a tech fall over Purdue's Dustin Norris in the first consolation round of eight.
Phipps reached the third-place bout Monday evening and fell to nationally-ranked Aaron Nagao of Minnesota. He has now placed at three tournaments this season and is 3-1 in duals. Joining Phipps as a placewinner on Monday was senior Darren Miller, who came in at sixth in the 141-pound bracket.
Bucknell returns to action on Friday, Jan. 6 to challenge No. 23 Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich. The Bison are 2-2 (1-0 EIWA) in duals this season.
