LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell senior defender Ella Payer has earned a spot on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Payer will be in her second year as a team captain in 2023. She was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection in each of the last two seasons, and she added an Academic All-Patriot League honor to her portfolio following the 2022 campaign.
Over the last three seasons, Payer has played in all 33 games with 32 starts on defense. In 2022 she ranked third in the Patriot League in caused turnovers with 21 and seventh in the league in draw controls with 82. That draw control total was the second-highest in team history and was boosted by a school-record 15 DCs in the final game of the season at Holy Cross.
Bucknell was picked seventh among the 10 teams in the Patriot League preseason poll. Loyola received the maximum 18 first-place votes and was selected as the preseason favorite with 166 points. Army (152) and Navy (136) took the next two spots, followed by Lehigh (112), Colgate (90), American (77), Bucknell (59), Boston University (49), Holy Cross (45), and Lafayette (18).
Loyola took three of the four preseason major awards. Georgia Latch was picked as the Preseason Attacker of the Year, Jillian Wilson was named Preseason Midfielder of the Year, and Katie Detwiler was named Preseason Defender of the Year. Lehigh's Hayley Hunt was the choice for Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
Bucknell opens the 2023 season on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Penn State.
