Wrestling Secures Two Placewinners on Second Day of 2023 Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Three more Bison competed on the second day of the 2023 Southern Scuffle on Monday and two finished as placewinners as the Bucknell wrestling team wrapped up a strong showing at the prestigious tournament.
Junior Kurt Phipps secured three more wins, including a 7-4 decision over Iowa State's No. 17/16 Ramazan Attasauov in the consolation quarterfinals. It was one of three nationally-ranked opponents Phipps moved past en route to a fourth-place finish. Phipps fell in the third-place bout to third-seeded Aaron Nagao of Minnesota. He finished with a 6-2 record for the weekend and leads the Bison with 19 total wins on the season.
Darren Miller was Bucknell's last wrestler remaining in the championship bracket entering Monday after going 3-0 at 141 pounds on Sunday. He fell to top-seeded Andrew Alirez of Northern Colorado in the semifinals, however, and secured a sixth-place finish after a pair of medical forfeits. Miller previously defeated No. 11 Dylan Droegemueller of North Dakota State in the quarterfinals on Sunday to reach the semis and finished the tournament with a 3-1 record.
Senior Mason McCready also competed Monday morning in the 197-pound blood round and fell by a narrow 3-2 decision against Little Rock's Stephen Little.
Bucknell returns to action on Friday, Jan. 6 to challenge No. 23 Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich. The Bison are 2-2 (1-0 EIWA) in duals this season.
