Record-setting day fueled by 2,946 donors to Bucknell Athletics & Recreation
LEWISBURG, Pa. – After topping the $1 million mark for the first time ever a year ago, alumni, parents, and friends of Bucknell Athletics and Recreation came together in unprecedented fashion on April 19-20; setting yet another record during the seventh annual One Herd One Day giving challenge. With the help of 2,942 supportive donors, $1,213,172 was generated for the Bison Club in just 24 hours (plus a brief overtime).
"We sincerely appreciate our alumni, parents, and Bison fans from all corners of the world," said Jermaine Truax, director of athletics and recreation. "As the landscape of intercollegiate athletics continues to evolve, it is critical that we provide the resources our programs need in order to compete at a championship level. One Herd One Day is the single most important day of the year for our department from a broad-based perspective, as it encourages participation at whatever level donors find meaningful. It was truly a day to celebrate, as the positive response from our dedicated supporters serves as yet another shining example of how Bison Nation can come together and invest in our student-athletes."
Leading the way for the second consecutive year was the Bison baseball program, which raised $140,963 to nearly match its impressive mark of $155,465 in 2021.
The program with the most donors was the Spiked Shoe Club (cross country/track & field), which received 375 contributions.
Out of the 23 varsity fundraising accounts, 15 saw increases from 2021, and 14 set One Herd One Day team records. These included men's and women's basketball, football, women's soccer, wrestling, cross country/track & field, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's golf, women's lacrosse, men's tennis, women's rowing, volleyball, and the cheerleading program.
"The amazing results from this year's One Herd One Day are another example of why I continue to be inspired by the generosity of the Bucknell family," said Scott Rosevear, vice president of university advancement. "It was truly a team effort, first and foremost from our loyal supporters who rose to the challenge once again this year. It also takes a great team behind the scenes to spread the word and create the platform for our donors to so publicly demonstrate their love of Bucknell. My special thanks to our coaches, students, staff in Athletics & Recreation, and my colleagues in University Advancement. Thank you again to all the donors who have immediately improved the experience for the more than 700 student-athletes and 500 students who participate in club or club varsity sports at Bucknell."
On the club sports side of the campaign, men's crew led the way in both number of donors and dollars raised, with 241 and $75,106, respectively. The men's squash program paced the group with an average gift size of $758.
Of the 2,942 One Herd One Day donors, 55 committed matching or challenge gifts that sparked the fundraising effort. In an effort to encourage early involvement, 37 of these commitments were pledged prior to April 19.
Following baseball in second place was the Gridiron Club (football), which eclipsed $120,000 for the first time in OHOD history. Men's golf ($97,837), Spiked Shoe Club ($96,755), and women's soccer ($57,857) rounded out the top five. It was the third year in a row that Kelly Cook's soccer program finished first among women's teams.
For the fourth year running men's golf led the varsity programs in average gift size at $1,378, followed by baseball ($610), men's tennis ($473) and volleyball ($466).
"This fundraising effort demonstrated togetherness to a tee, and we are extremely thankful for our loyal donor base," said Joel Moersch, senior associate athletic director for revenue generation and strategic advancement. "The enthusiasm and competitive nature of our student-athletes and coaches combined with the tireless efforts of our One Herd One Day team was outstanding. None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of our alumni, parents, and fans, and we appreciate every single person who contributed to this campaign."
