Seidman and Delp also lock up podium spots
ITHACA, N.Y. – Bucknell's Zach Hartman (165) and Darren Miller (141) advanced to the EIWA semifinals by going 2-0 on Saturday at Newman Arena at Bartels Hall.
Hartman also clinched his fourth-straight ticket to the NCAA Championships because he is guaranteed he will receive one of the conference's seven automatic bids. The defending EIWA champion at 165 pounds became the fifth Bison to qualify for four NCAA Championships since the wrestling program was reinstated ahead of the 2006-07 season, joining David Marble (133, 2007-10), Andy Rendos (165, 2007-10), Joe Stolfi (285, 2013-16) and current volunteer assistant coach Tyler Smith (141, 2015-18).
Senior Brandon Seidman (125) and sophomore Nick Delp (157) are also alive in the wrestlebacks, meaning they are guaranteed to join Hartman and Miller on the 2022 EIWA podium.
Hartman opened his final EIWA Championships by pinning Brown's Keegan Rothrock in just 28 seconds. The senior earned his date with Harvard's Philip Conigliaro in tomorrow's semifinals with a 9-5 decision over Drexel's Evan Barczak in a rematch of the 2021 EIWA semifinals. Notably, Barczak was ranked 26th in the most recent Intermat poll while Hartman checked in at 10th; this was Hartman's 18th career victory over a nationally ranked grappler.
Miller reached the semifinals, where he will face top-seeded Matt Kazimir of Columbia, behind a pair of decisions. The junior, who placed third in the 133-pound weight class at the 2021 EIWA Championships, opened his day with a 5-2 triumph over J.J. Wilson of No. 10 Cornell and then edged Lehigh's Connor McGonagle by a 4-2 margin.
With a win in tomorrow's semifinal bout, Miller will lock up one of the EIWA's four automatic bids to the NCAA Championships by guaranteeing a top-four finish.
Seidman scored one of Bucknell's most dramatic victories of the day, edging American's Max Leete, 2-1, on an escape in the second tiebreaker period during the second consolation round of eight. Seidman, who dispatched Brown's Reese Fry, 11-4, in his first bout, rebounded fom a sudden-victory loss to Columbia's Joe Manchio, Intermat's 32nd-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds; he will become a two-time EIWA placewinner, as he previously finished sixth at the 2021 EIWA Championships.
Delp went 2-1 with his loss coming in the quarterfinals to Intermat's eighth-ranked grappler at 157 pounds. He clipped Sacred Heart's Nick Palumbo, 3-1, and blanked Brown's Jack Bokina, 7-0, to secure a podium finish in his first appearance at the EIWA Championships. He was one of five Bison who made his debut at the EIWA's premier event this season, joining freshmen Kolby DePron (149) and Logan Deacetis (184) and juniors Sam Barnes (174) and Luke Niemeyer (285).
Niemeyer, Kurt Phipps (133) and Mason McCready bowed out of the EIWA Championships in heartbreaking fashion, each falling in overtime in his first consolation-bracket bout. Overall, seven of Bucknell's 14 losses came by three or fewer points.
As a team, the Bison are in 12th place with 29 points. No. 10 Cornell (94.5), No. 18 Penn (86.5) and No. 22 Princeton (69) are the top three teams.
